What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

It is normal for anyone to experience brief pauses between the breathing patterns that their bodies follow during sleep. However, in some cases, the pauses are prolonged causing drastic alteration to the regular breathing pattern. In the long run, the irregularity will lead to a decline in oxygen intake and disrupt a person’s sleep. The worst thing that can happen to a person in such a situation is to die due to heart failure.

This condition is called Apnea, a Greek work which literally means “lack of wind”. There are three types of Apnea, these are:

  1. Obstructive sleep Apnea
  2. Central Sleep Apnea
  3. Mixed Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

This type of apnea is commonly seen in children. In general, children experience obstructive sleep apnea because of enlarged adenoids or tonsils. Kids are very susceptible to having irritated tissues along the throat lining. The irritation usually leads to the obstruction of the air passageway. Approximately 1-3% of all kids with the preschool age bracket have OSA.

Symptoms of OSA

The four most common symptoms of OSA are:

  1. Snoring – since snoring is the result of having vibrating mouth and throat parts due to enlargement.  Click here to read more about snoring.
  2. Difficulty in breathing – although the child may still be breathing normally, he/she might have to exert effort so as to inhale enough oxygen. This is also called laboured breathing.
  3. Restless Sleeps – a child might experience restlessness during sleep, exhibiting unusual sleeping positions.
  4. Lethargy – due to the sleeping difficulties, the child will feel sleepy even during daytime. This might even extend to having behavioural problems.

OSA is most observable in the sleeping patterns of children. Because of its ability to disrupt a person’s sleep, he/she will most likely develop a unique and weird sleeping pattern (i.e. waking up in the middle of the night, falling asleep in the afternoon, etc.). In terms of the child’s overall wellbeing, OSA’s effects can extend to a child’s poor performance in school. Studies show that kids having difficulty at school also exhibit symptoms of OSA.

Because of the dangerous effects of OSA to children, parents should be wary about its symptoms and have their children checked once any of the symptoms start to appear. Treatment for OSA includes adenotonsillectomy or the surgical “removal” of the enflamed adenoids or tonsils. Another popular treatment is called CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure. A child under the CPAP treatment is made to wear a nose mask during sleep.

Central Apnea

This type of apnea usually occurs when a person’s breathing pattern is altered due to a medical condition in the brain. In most cases, this happens when the portion of the brain that controls a person’s breathing is affected by a disease or a biological anomaly. Central apnea is common in premature infants because these babies often have immature brains which might eventually develop problems that lead to central apnea.

Mixed Apnea

This type of apnea is a mixture of both Obstructive and central apnea. This is not only exhibited by children, in fact, many cases of mixed apnea have been recorder to involve young adults. This type of apnea may occur during sleep or even while the person is awake.

What if Your Child has Apnea?

If your child exhibit any of the symptoms of apnea, it is best if you immediately consult a doctor or at least dial 911 when the problem is currently happening. However, be secured that apnea is completely treatable and when the diagnosis and evaluation of your child’s condition is made early, all the harms associated to it will no longer be existent. In some cases, apnea just goes away on their own, even without treatment or medication.

The Benefits of Quality Sleep

We all live in a very fast world. We are all supercharged to multi-task and do a lots of things is a single day. We are so busy trying to make money and to live life that we usually forget about our basic need to sleep.

Sleeping is as vital as food and water, but not every see sleep as such. In fact, many people would rather miss sleeping that misses the other enticing things that they can do when they are awake.

One thing that we most often neglect is the fact that the lack of sleep results to the malfunctioning of our brains. In has been found out that a person who has not slept for about 32 hours will have a comprehension level similar to that of someone who is extremely drunk. To this effect, the lack of sleep can greatly affect our judgement and our ability to make sound decisions.

Various studies have already revealed that adults need at least 6 hours of sleep in a regular 24-hour period. This means that we need to spend about 1/3 of our entire lives for sleep alone! That’s how important sleep is. Through it, we get to regenerate enough energy to go on with our lives.

A person who sleeps less than what is required will be less productive and less happy. Those who get enough usually get a happier disposition and are inclined to do more tasks more efficiently than those who lack sleep.

Moreover, sleep can also change a person’s mood. When a person is sleepy, he or she also tends to be crappy and gloomy. On the other hand, someone who has enough sleep is more cheerful and has more patience than those who has not.

The Common Misconception about Sleep

We often hear people say that sleeping is only a waste of time, especially for those who have a lot of things on their hands. However, if you come to think of it, if a person has enough sleep, he or she will most likely be more productive than someone who tried so hard to not sleep just to finish the same project or task.

Imagine that you have a task which needs to be done. Because you feel that sleeping is only a waste of time, you exert all your energy in trying to finish the project. However, in the long run, you become less patient and moody. As a result, you committed a lot of mistakes which need to be corrected. At the end of the day week, you end up repeating tasks which could have been finished if you have the right presence of mind which you could have gotten if you had enough sleep.

In short, if you really want to get things done, make sure that you brain and body are ready to take on the tasks which you want to do. The best way to do so is to give your brain and body what they need – that is, food, and water and of course, sleep.

Sleeping Difficulties

However, some people might have not intended to not get enough sleep. Some people might be suffering from insomnia and other problems that causes sleeping difficulties. If this is your case, then you better consult a doctor to get a full assessment of you situation. Having known how important sleep is, it is in your best interest to make sure that you will be able to enjoy quality sleep while you still can. If you snore during sleep, I suggest that you read this article about “The Normal Causes of Snoring”.

The Normal Causes of Snoring

Millions of people around the world do not experience quality sleep because of snoring. Whether you are the snorer or you are sleeping with one, your sleeping pattern will most likely be affected. Well, apart from being downright irritating, snoring is also a warning sign that something unhealthy is going on in a person’s body.

Snoring happens when parts of the mouth and throat vibrate due to breathing difficulties. In general, there are two main types of snoring: primary and the more complicated one called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). The latter one is more complex and thus we will tackle it in a separate article. Click here to read more about OSA.

Primary Snoring

During the course of our wake, we breathe in and out normally (unless breathing is brought to our attention). This means that breathing occurs naturally even though we are not thinking about it. However, this changes when we are asleep. During sleep, our brains make sure that our body is in its most relax state.

For some people, when they are extremely relaxed, the muscles supporting their respiratory system also tend to expand. When this happens, the air passageway becomes obstructed causing breathing difficulties. Such a condition leads to the vibration of some parts of the mouth and the throat. The vibrations produce the sound which we all call as the snore.

It is evident that men are more likely to snore than women. Men are bound to accumulate more weight around their neck areas while women accumulate weight around their waists or arms. So for men, their heavier necks are most likely to press harder against their throats causing the blockage of the air passageways. Women also have the hormone called progesterone. This hormone is the main agent why women do not accumulate as much fat around their neck area as men.

Causes of Snoring

Nonetheless, fat accumulation around the neck area is not the only reason why people snore. The other reasons are listed below:

1. Allergies – Some people tend to have breathing difficulties when attacked by their allergies. In such cases, their air passageways are blocked causing the vibrations which produce the sound we call as the snore.

2. Dry Nasal Passages – Moist nasal passages lessen the vibrations caused by the movement of air in and out of our throats. When it is dry, the vibrations become stronger and thus produce an audible sound.

3. Cold and Flu – When one is sick with cold or flu, he or she will most likely have a clogged nose causing breathing difficulties.

4. Too much alcohol before sleeping – Alcohol can make some parts of the mouth and throat expands.

5. Goiter and other Thyroid problems – Obviously, when one has a goiter or has some other thyroid problems, it is very possible for her or him to have inflamed throats.

6. Large Belly

7. Irritation Caused by nasal sprays

8. Surgery on the throat and the nasal passages

9. Inflammation of the tonsils

10. Medications that can relaxation

There can be other reasons why a person would snore apart from those listed above. But the common factor that involves all these reasons is the fact that snoring is the result of breathing difficulties during sleep. It is wise if you will consult your doctor so that you will know what causes your snoring problems.  Only then will you be able to assess if your snoring problem is still normal or if you need immediate medical attention. Do not forget that snoring can be a sign of a much more complex disease, so better act quick.

Frequently Asked Questions about Snoring

1. Why do people snore?

When we are asleep, our brains “hot-wire” our bodies to loosen up and relax. As this happens, some parts of our bodies tend to expand or shrink in size. For example, our throat has the tendency to tighten up when overly relaxed. This condition actually disturbs the regular passage of through our bodies. As a result, some parts of our mouth would start to vibrate, producing a sound which we call as the “snore”.

2. Why do men snore more often than women?

Do you know that men have a higher tendency to snore than women? This “bias” has something to do with how the bodies of both sexes are naturally built. Men usually put weight around their necks as oppose to women who have it around their thighs or stomach. Of course, the additional weight will put more pressure on the neck and in turn, squeeze down the air passageway in it. The disturbance will lead to muscular vibration and thus, to snoring.

Nonetheless, women cease to accumulate weight around their waists, arms or thighs when they reach 70. At this age, they will also start to put on weight around their necks. This is the reason why at this age bracket, men and women will most likely snore at the same rate.

3. Can overeating lead to snoring?

Eating more than what your body can burn would only result to the accumulation of stored fats in your body. Without enough exercise, you will most likely end up being overweight or obese. People who are overweight are very likely to have a collar size of not less than 16.5 inches. At this size, the air passageway inside the neck should be experiencing too much pressure already which can eventually lead to snoring.

Thus, it is safe to conclude that being overweight can actually lessen the quality of a person’s sleep. It has been found out that those who snore do not get as much sleep as those who don’t. It is in the best interest of everybody to make sure that they are getting quality sleep. If we lack such, we will definitely feel lethargic and tired during our wake.

Those who are overweight should exert enough effort to curb their eating habits. They should also try to be more active and engage in athletic activities every once in a while. Of course, apart from the benefit of getting a good night sleep, if they will continue living a healthier lifestyle, they will also be preventing a lot of life-threatening diseases.

4. Why do smokers snore more than those who don’t smoke?

Apart from the health hazards of smoking, it can also cause snoring. What most people don’t know is that the smoke produced by cigarettes can actually cause nasal irritations. This an eventually lead to the swelling of the throat area and of the nasal cavity. When this happens, breathing will be much more difficult resulting to the vibration of some of parts of the mouth and the throat.

One thing that’s very alarming about smoking is that the smoker does not only harm himself, but also the other people around him or her. Second-hand smoke can irritate as much as first-hand smoke. This means that even a by-passer would have the possibility of having inflamed throats. And again, with inflamed throats, they will become would-be snorers.

This is the reason why those who smoke and those who live with smokers tend to have weird sleeping patterns.  Thus, the best way to get quality sleep and to avoid the health hazards associated to smoking is to simply quit the habit.
